Les anomenades dades composicionals son vectors de dades, les components dels quals es caracteritzen per tenir suma constant donat que recullen la participació relativa que cada component té dins el total. Aquesta restricció de la suma constant que lliga les components de les dades composicionals fa que la hipòtesi d'independència de les components -molt habitual en estadística- s'incompleixi d'entrada. Aquest fet impossibilita, des d'un punt de vista teòric, la aplicació dels procediments estadístics estàndard per analitzar aquest tipus de dades. Malgrat això, la comunitat científica que utilitza aquest tipus de dades, no és conscient d'aquest error conceptual de base i aplica habitualment aquests procediments estadístics estàndard la qual cosa provoca que les interpretacions que se'n deriven siguin normalment errònies o no del tot correctes.

És per això que la línia de recerca actual està centrada en profunditzar en el tractament matemàtic correcte de les dades composicionals i, en especial, en el seu tractament estadístic, seguint d'aquesta manera la línia de recerca que l'any 1982 va iniciar el professor John Aitchison (veure Statistical Analisys of Compositional Data, Chapman and Hall, 1986, 416 p.).

La difusió d'aquestes tècniques específiques per a l'anàlisi de les dades composicionals es realitza especialment en l'àmbit de la Geologia i de l'Arqueometria.
